7 Budget-Friendly Utah Winter Activities

Posted by Brittany Humphrey on

Utah is a beautiful state and offers over 84,900 square miles of a variety of activities the whole family can enjoy. It is one of the best places in the United States to see a wide difference in climate and scenery. If you visit in the winter and aren’t a big fan of snowy weather, just head to southern Utah for a more mild escape!

We want to share 7 budget-Friendly Utah winter activities that you can try this year with your family, and we can’t wait to hear how your adventures go!

Indoor

Sometimes in a Utah winter, the weather can get a little bit nasty, and it is always good to have some family activities in mind that can be done indoors. A great way to do this would be to check out some of the museums, planetariums, and libraries located throughout the state!

 Museums

With more than 260 museums in Utah, you are bound to find one (or more) that your family can enjoy on a rough weather day! If you are a fan of winter sports and want to learn more about the

Winter Olympics (that were hosted in Utah), you can check out the museum at Olympic Park. Admission is free to enter the museum, but there are some activities inside that have costs to them.

For more family fun, you can check out the Natural History Museum of Utah and even use it as a field trip with your kids if you are completing a homeschool program! You can become a museum member if you feel like you can make multiple trips during the year, which can save you on admission fees when you visit.

Planetariums

The Clark Planetarium would be a perfect place to visit on an awfully frigid day. With relatively low admission fees and an array of activities and information, everyone in your group is bound to leave with some new knowledge and maybe even a little bit of awe and wonder. It includes some free interactive exhibits, as well as educational shows in the IMAX theatre. This would be a fun activity that kids of all ages would enjoy.

Libraries

One of our favorite things to do in the winter, and all year long, is to explore the local library! It’s a low-cost activity that you can enjoy while also developing important skills and habits in yourself and your children. There are always new books coming out, and many libraries hold special events and activities throughout the year.

If you want to venture out for a day trip and check out the awesome library in downtown Salt Lake City you might be amazed at how fun a library can actually be!

Outdoor

If you enjoy being outside in the winter months, then Utah is an amazing place to get some good exercise while also taking in some amazing views! Northern Utah is the place to be to find snow, tall mountains, and a great sense of adventure!

With Utah being home to 5 National Parks, there is always an outdoor activity ready for you to try out. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned expert or a novice trying out something for the first time; there are so many fun opportunities available here to enjoy.

Zoos

Another outdoor activity that the entire family will enjoy is the Hogle Zoo. Covering 42 acres and including 800 animals, it might take you more than one trip to soak it all in. Visiting the zoo in the winter also often offers lower admission prices than peak times, as well as the animals are more active in some situations.

Skiing/Sledding

Utah offers some of the best ski resorts in the United States. Even if you’re skill level isn’t going to take you to the toughest hills, you will still have some of the greatest snow to enjoy and really soak up the fun of winter outdoor activities.

A couple of the best skiing, sledding, and snowboarding options include Big Cottonwood Canyon and Powder Mountain.

Dog Sledding

Have you ever wanted to try out dog sledding? Utah is a great place to give it a! go! It is one of those fun winter activities that you just can’t do anywhere you go, but we have it here in our own backyard! This opportunity gives you a chance to tour kennels, play with the dogs and even go on your own dogsledding excursion!

Ice Castles

The winter season is the best time to get out and enjoy the Ice Castles in Midway, Utah. This is an experience that you won’t ever forget! While it’s not quite as affordable as some of the other options we have gone over, it’s definitely still not a bad price to see something so unique.

You can also visit the Homestead Crater in Midway and try out the hot springs and other fun adventures they have to offer!

Winter is also a great time to grab some hot chocolate and go on a scenic drive to see all of the snow-capped mountains or even take a quick hike and soak in the views that consistently change with each season. If you have the opportunity, you can also work on exploring some of your local restaurants or check out an old historic main street in a town you don’t get to visit very often when your schedule is more complex during the summer months.

While planning your adventures, be sure and check out some of our favorite travel-friendly snacks!
