How to Make the Best Homemade Chili with Bulk Beans, Beef and Bacon

Posted by Cassie Michael on

Learn how to make an easy, hearty one-pot chili with fresh meats and produce and ONE can of beans from the Food and Meat Co-op!

I love the Food and Meat Co-op so, so much!! Our freezers are constantly full of beautiful, delicious, high quality proteins for a fraction of the retail cost.

I also love the food security our community brings to the table (get it?!?) and how we don't have to break the bank to maintain this food security.

I have also loved Food Storage Month or Pantry Stock-Up Month! My regular non-freezer food storage was beginning to dwindle, so it's perfect timing.

I am looking forward to stocking on food each month.

As such, the #10 can red beans that the co-op obtained on clearance for like 70% off the retail price is really quite priceless for our food storage. There are still several left.

Beans are incredibly versatile and incredibly nutritious on their own. If the SHTF, crack open a can of cooked beans and eat them right from the can. It contains the calories, carbs and protein in its own.

But while I am maintaining a long-term food storage, I also rotate through. So I wanted to share what I recently made for my family to rotate through the storage.

Family Size Chili! And this chili is amazing because it also has that amazing thick cut delicious Co-op bacon and the high-quality ground sirloin!

Quick Note: the #10 can of red beans is equivalent to 7 "regular" size cans and at only $15 for a case of 6 - this makes each #10 can only $2.50.

In other words, it would be like buying each can of beans for only $0.37 each! And this stock up deal gives you about 42 cans worth for your food storage!

That is a great deal!

So now on with the recipe for the Best Hearty Homemade Chili!

We are a family of 8 and this recipe fed our family 2.5 times! So it is a 20 -serving one-pot dish. I normally make things in bulk and freeze for a second already made meal.

What you need:

1 -  #10 can of Red Beans (Kidney Beans)

1 - 2lb package of ground sirloin

8 - slices of thick cut co-op bacon

3 - regular cans of sweet kernel corn

2 - regular cans of diced tomatoes

2 - regular size case of tomato sauce (not the little cans, like 15-16oz cans)

1 - small can of green chiles

2 - bell peppers of choice

1 - large onion

1 - cup of chili seasoning (homemade recipe for this below)

1- 2-3 TBSP of salt

1 - 1 TBSP of pepper

What you need for homemade chili seasoning:

  • 1/4 cup paprika
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 TBSP garlic powder
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper (more if you like it hotter)
  • 1 TBSP onion powder
  • 2 tsp dried or ground basil
  • 1 tsp cilantro

To Make Best Hearty Homemade Chili

1. Cut up the raw bacon into pieces and brown in a giant stock pot. Once browned, drain the bacon and grease.

2. Brown up the 2lbs of ground sirloin. Once browned (rinse if you want leaner chili), add the drained bacon back to the beef.

3. Add the #10 can of red beans (kidney beans) to the stock pot.

4. Add the cans of tomatoes, tomato sauce, corn and chiles, salt and pepper and bring to a boil. Once to a boil, reduce hit and simmer on low for about 20 minutes.

5. In a separate pan, saute' the chopped peppers and onions until they have a little char (for that smoked flavor). Once soft and charred, add to the chili while it is simmering.

6. Add the chili seasoning to the last 15 or so minutes of your simmer and mix well.

7. Serve with shredded cheese on top!

That's it! Super easy, super hearty, full of bold Southwest flavors and super satisfying!

We make a giant double pot of chili about once every 2-3 weeks. So our case of 6 #10 cans will last us around 2-3 months.
